Man Sentenced to 30 Years in 2021 Killing of Fla. Police Officer

Othal Wallace had been found guilty of manslaughter and not first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Daytona Beach Police Officer Jason Raynor in June 2021.

A man was sentenced to 30 years in prison for the 2021 killing of a Florida police officer after he was convicted of manslaughter last month.

Othal Wallace fatally shot Daytona Beach Police Officer Jason Raynor when the officer responded to a suspicious incident June 23, 2021, WTLV-TV reports. Raynor approached Wallace in his vehicle, and a confrontation ensued. Raynor was shot in the head, and Wallace fled the scene.

After a two-day manhunt, Wallace was apprehended in Georgia. He had been hiding in a treehouse outside of Atlanta that was owned by an extreme Black militia group.

Raynor was rushed to the hospital following the shooting, but he died nearly two months later.

Prosecutors had initially sought a first-degree murder conviction and were seeking the death penalty. However, a jury deliberated for 11 hours and found Wallace not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter.
